Why Most Granola Is Just Sugary Cereal

Why Most Granola Is Just Sugary Cereal

Granola has a strong health image and often deserves none of it. Most commercial granolas contain 20-30% sugar by weight (similar to or higher than many 'unhealthy' cereals). The 'whole grain' and 'natural' labelling obscures the actual sugar load.

What labels reveal

Per 100g, check sugar content. Under 10g = reasonable. 10-15g = moderate. Above 15g = essentially dessert. Many popular brands (Jordans Country Crisp, Dorset Cereals luxury versions, supermarket 'gourmet' lines) sit at 20-30g.

Better breakfast options

Greek yoghurt + berries + chopped nuts (protein-rich, low sugar). Porridge with fruit (low sugar, sustained energy). Eggs with vegetables (low carb, high protein). Homemade granola (control over sugar — replace half with cinnamon and toasted nuts).

If you love granola, choose lower-sugar varieties (under 10g/100g) or make your own. Don't trust the health framing — check the actual label.
