Three ordinary, well-intentioned habits are doing this. Low-sodium eating, recommended by nearly every cardiologist for blood pressure management, cuts iodized table salt along with the sodium — and for a lot of women, that's the single biggest source of iodine in their diet. Plant-forward eating pushes out dairy and seafood, the two food groups that carry the most reliable iodine content pound for pound, and a diet built around produce, grains, and plant proteins can look perfectly balanced while still running low. The Sea Salt Mix-Up Nobody Warns You About
Here's the part that catches even nutrition-conscious women off guard: kosher salt, Himalayan pink salt, fleur de sel, and most artisan sea salts are not iodized unless the label specifically says so. Kosher salt in particular has become the default in a lot of home kitchens over the past decade, pushed by cooking shows and recipe blogs that praise its texture and ease of pinching between fingers — and that switch, harmless on its own, quietly removes what used to be a household's main iodine source. Check the box. If it says "iodized" on it, you're covered for that source; if it just says "sea salt" or "kosher salt" with no mention of iodine, assume it's not contributing anything on that front. A reasonable middle ground a lot of home cooks land on is keeping iodized salt for everyday cooking and saving the flaky, expensive finishing salt for the occasions where texture actually matters — on a tomato salad or the top of a steak, not stirred into a pot of soup where nobody will notice the difference anyway.
The Supplement Trap
More is not better here, and this is where a lot of well-meaning supplement routines go sideways. The tolerable upper intake level for adults is 1,100 micrograms per day, and kelp supplements — sold loosely as a "natural" thyroid support — are notorious for wildly inconsistent dosing, with some brands testing far above their label claims. Too much iodine can trigger the same kind of thyroid dysfunction as too little: both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are documented outcomes of chronic overconsumption, and the risk climbs sharply if you already have Hashimoto's or Graves' disease, conditions that make the thyroid unusually sensitive to iodine swings in either direction.
Skip the kelp capsules until you've actually had bloodwork done. A baseline TSH test before starting any iodine supplement is non-negotiable, and if you have a personal or family history of thyroid disease, loop in your doctor before adding anything beyond food sources — this is one of the few nutrients where the food-first approach is genuinely the safer one, not just the trendier one.
The realistic move for most women isn't a supplement aisle detour at all. It's switching the salt in the shaker at home to the iodized version, keeping a couple of servings of dairy or cod in the weekly rotation, and asking for the blood work before layering anything else on top. That's a smaller ask than it sounds, and it closes the gap for most people without introducing a new risk in the process.
