Liver cleanses, detox juices, and 'flush' protocols sell solutions to a non-existent problem. Your liver detoxifies continuously without external intervention; the protocols sold to support it mostly don't, and some actively cause harm.
What the liver actually does
Continuously filters everything absorbed from the gut, neutralises toxins via two enzymatic phases, packages metabolites for excretion via bile or kidneys. Healthy livers in healthy people don't need 'support' — they do this 24/7 regardless of dietary fads.
Conditions that genuinely affect liver function: hepatitis (viral or autoimmune), alcohol abuse, NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, increasingly common with metabolic syndrome), certain medication overuse. These are medical conditions, not 'sluggish liver' issues solved by juice cleanses.
What 'detox' products actually do
Juice cleanses: high sugar load, low protein, minimal fibre. Cause water weight loss (rebounds), nutrient inadequacy, and disordered relationship with food. Not 'detoxification'.
Detox teas with senna or other laxatives: cause bowel evacuation marketed as 'cleansing'. Risk dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, dependency.
Activated charcoal supplements: bind compounds in the gut indiscriminately — including nutrients and medications. Can reduce contraceptive pill effectiveness.
'Detox' supplements with milk thistle, dandelion: mostly harmless but mostly without proven benefit either.
What actually supports liver function
Limit alcohol (the single biggest dietary lever — current guidance is 14 units/week max for women, less is better). Maintain healthy weight (NAFLD reverses with 5-10% weight loss). Adequate protein (liver regenerates from protein). Avoid unnecessary supplements (high-dose vitamin A, certain herbal supplements like kava and chaparral cause liver damage).
Get blood tests if concerned: ALT, AST, GGT show liver enzyme levels. Elevated = investigate; normal = your liver is fine.
Your liver does not need cleansing. If you're concerned, get blood tests; otherwise, reduce alcohol, eat reasonably, and skip the detox products altogether.
